Message from Dr. Meg.
Welcome to our Cougar community. This past year Jordan was distringuished with the Gold Ribbon Award and an Exemptary Arts award. Drs. DeMore earned the Educator of the Year award from Burbank Arts for All and we had one of the largest promotiong classes since I have been principal at Jordan. We hae seen ongoing improvements at our site from updated wireless to our new "History of Burbank" mural, and yet we remain convinced that the people within these walls are the heart and soul of Jordan.
Jordan has a long history of promoting academic achievement, creating lifelong learners, and encouraging responsible citizens. Our staff is committed to providing engaging and meaningful teaching practices while also nurturing creativity and social development among our students. From competing in the CPKulinary Challenge to visiting the Science Center or exploring their passion through Genius Hour, our students are involved in authentic learning experiences. Jordan is proud of our “student-centered” mindset, and we encourage students to take leadership roles. Middle school can be a unique journey for students and families. We know how important it is to keep the lines of communication open and maintain a sense of humor. We are here to problem-solve with students and families as they navigate the twists and turns of adolescence. You will find administrators and staff in front of school in the morning and after school. Feel free to ask us questions and give us feedback on how we are doing.
This year we will continue to implement the Common Core. These national standards focus on critical thinking, problem solving, text complexity, and citing evidence to support a claim. Assessments will be administered on the computer and involve a variety of skills including research, writing, and literacy. There will be a variety of opportunities for you to learn more about these standards and how you can support learning goals at home at various parent meetings and events, but feel free to ask any staff member for resources. Jordan continues using the Accelerated Reader program to encourage students reading fluency and comprehension. Please help us by making sure your child is reading every night.
Involvement is the key to success for the middle school years. Students have many options at Jordan to find their niche and belong. We are home to award-winning choir and band programs. We have culinary arts, computer classes, dance ensemble, and many clubs like the Builder's Club, Harry Potter Club and Scholarship Club. Our ASB is active and plans weekly spirit activities, organizes blue and gold game, spirit rallies, and raises money for causes like the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. We encourage families to also consider joining groups like PTSA and ELAC. These organizations offer a variety of ways for you to learn more about middle school, meet other parents, and get involved. Our PTSA President is Mrs. Joanna Peresie. Our parents have wonderful ideas for supporting Jordan, and you will often find them on campus helping in various ways. We look forward to seeing you at PTSA meetings, Parent Lunches at Jordan, or you can join us for "Coffee with Cashman," an informal time when we can talk over a cup of coffee on the first Friday of every month in the library starting at 8:30am. Please continue exploring the website, read the daily bulletin for club announcements and other important information, update your email in Aeries.net so you can receive email blasts, join the “David Starr Jordan Middle School PTSA Community” Facebook page, sign up with Remind101 for information texts and check the calendar frequently as information will be regularly updated.
Jordan is committed to creating a positive school culture and we want you to feel this when you walk in the door or attend Jordan events. Jordan is also a Title I school like the other two middle schools in Burbank. This means that we are receiving some additional funding to assist students who are still struggling to attain proficiency. We are thrilled that Title I allows us to serve students through additional support like after school tutoring, summer intervention classes and support staff.
Jordan is all about school spirit, tradition and pride. Show your Cougar spirit and get involved! Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions. My door is always open.
