- ELD Program Overview
English Language Development (ELD)
-
Students identified as English Learners benefit from participation in the general classroom instructional program and specific ELD instruction provided by trained classroom teachers and ELD instructional assistants, supervised by our ELD Specialist, Arpine Ovsepyan.
One of the annual assessments used to evaluate language growth is the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC). Each spring, English Learners are assessed in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, providing teachers and parents with valuable information about their language growth. This assessment is given until students meet all four criteria for reclassification as fluent in English language usage.
Designated ELD instruction is provided by the classroom teacher and often supported by an ELD instructional assistant. Integrated ELD instruction includes Specially Designed Academic Instruction in English (SDAIE) methodology. SDAIE is a set of strategies and ways of teaching grade-level content (i.e. social studies, science, math, etc.) that helps English learners master content skills as they improve their English proficiency.
More information is provided on the district's English Learners page and ELD Resources site.
