• Burbank Unified School District will participate in the Great ShakeOut earthquake drill on the morning of October 19, 2023.

During this time, students will be alerted to an “earthquake” and instructed to get under their desk to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”

All students, staff and visitors will hold this position for approximately one minute before being instructed to evacuate the building to their pre- designated evacuation zones. All participants will be encouraged to wear a mask during the entire drill.

Each school then puts their plan for handling a major, regional earthquake into action by:

    • Accounting for all students, staff and visitors
    • Establishing a command post
    • Setting up a medical treatment center
    • Practicing search & rescue skills
    • Operating a reunification gate

This drill lasts about an hour. Students learn proper actions to take in an earthquake. Faculty and staff are able to practice their emergency response skills. The post-drill debrief identifies areas of needed improvement. Each school will conduct a second earthquake drill in order to work on efficiency.

    At home

Please talk to your children before and after the Great ShakeOut. Earthquakes are a fact of life here in California and there are plenty of educational resources.
