Dating - Domestic Violence

DATING/DOMESTIC VIOLENCE occurs when one person attempts to control the another through use of power and abuse. Abuse can include emotional abuse, verbal abuse, mental abuse, economic abuse, physical abuse, and sexual abuse. Dating/domestic violence does not discriminate based on age, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or economic status. It occurs in both casual and serious relationships. Although a large proportion of victims are women, men and transgender* individuals are also victims of abuse.

Recommended strategies to prevent violence in teen dating relationships include:

  • Learning and practicing safe and healthy relationship skills;
  • Connecting with adults who model healthy relationships;
  • Interventions for children who witness domestic violence; and
  • Creating school climates that promote understanding, empathy, and respect. (CDC, 2018)
