A-G REQUIREMENTS

Waiver of “Language Other than English” Requirement

If you can demonstrate competency in a language other than English that is equivalent to or higher than that expected of students who have completed two years of language other than English study, you may be allowed a waiver for this language requirement. For further information, contact the CSU campuses to which you are applying.

·        How to Make Up Missing Courses

If you didn’t take all the required high school courses or earned Dgrades in some of them, you have several options to make up these courses and qualify for CSU admission.

You can complete appropriate high school courses with a grade of Cor better either in summer school

You can complete appropriate high school courses with a grade of Cor better in adult school. Courses in this category must be those found on the high school or adult school UC “a-g” course lists. Some adult schools may not have a-g course lists. See your high school counselor for an application.

You may also complete college courseswith a grade of C or better in the missing subject areas.

You can earn an acceptable score on examinations such as the SAT subject examinations, Advanced Placement examinations.

MINIMUM GPA

To qualify for regular admission, freshman applicants must complete the a-g requirements with a minimum GPA of 2.0. The grades you earn in high school are the most important factor in CSU admission decisions. Your high school grade point average is calculated using your grades in all your college prep “a-g”classes completed in grades 10 and 11.

SAT/ACT

Freshman applicants with a 3.0 and above GPA qualify for regular admission with any SAT or ACT score. Impacted campuses and impacted first-time freshmen enrollment categories often include test scores among the supplemental criteria required of all applicants to those campuses and enrollment categories.

Students with a GPA between 2.0 and 2.99 must get a specific score on the SAT or ACT to qualify for regular admission. The CSU uses a calculation called an eligibility indexthat combines your high school grade point average with the score you earn on either the SAT or ACT tests. If you have your high school GPA and the results of your SAT or ACT test, then you can calculate your eligibility index. From there you can quickly see whether you meet the minimum admission standards. Remember, some campuses have higher standards for particular majors or those students who live outside the local campus area.

Once you have taken the SAT test, you should list the CSUMentor institution code, so that CSUMentor can store your scores for any CSU campus to retrieve. The CSUMentor institution code for the SAT is 3594.

If you have listed a CSU campus as an ACT score report recipient, you can use the ACT Scores Managerto release your score to additional campuses. Before you can use the ACT Scores Manager, you must first have arranged for your scores to be sent to a CSU campus.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM

What Is EOP?

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is designed to improve access and retention of historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged students. EOP students have the potential and demonstrated motivation to perform satisfactorily at a CSU, but they have not been able to realize their fullest potential because of their economic or educational background. The program provides admission and academic assistance to EOP-eligible undergraduate students. In many cases, the program offers financial assistance to eligible students. Campuses tailor their programs to accommodate the needs of their student population.

What Can EOP Do for You?

EOP provides information to help you select a campus and assists you in completing the admission process. Once admitted as an EOP student, you may be eligible to enroll in an EOP summer program to strengthen your math, reading, or other skills. Orientation sessions are provided to help you learn about campus services and programs. During your enrollment in college, you can receive counseling, tutoring, and advising services. If you are eligible, an EOP grant may be awarded.

EPT/ELM TESTS

English Placement for First-Time Freshmen
The CSU requires new students to be tested in English as soon as possible after they are admitted and before enrolling at a CSU campus. The test is used to determine whether students are prepared for college work; and if they are not, to place the students in appropriate remediation courses or activities. Students may be exempt from the test if they have scored well on other specified tests or have completed appropriate courses.

PURPOSE OF THE EPT

The English Placement Test (EPT) is designed to assess the level of reading and writing skills of entering undergraduate students so that they can be placed in appropriate baccalaureate courses. Those undergraduate students who do not demonstrate college-level skills will be enrolled in courses or programs designed to help them gain these skills. (The test is not part of the admission requirements to the CSU, but it is a condition of enrollment if the student is not exempt.) Students may take the EPT only once. It may not be repeated. There is an $18 charge to take the test.

WHO MUST TAKE THE EPT

The CSU EPT must be completed by all non-exempt entering undergraduates prior to enrollment in any course, including remedial courses. Students who score 147 or above on the EPT will be placed in college-level composition classes.

Exemptions from the EPT are granted only to those who present proof of one of the following:

A score of "Exempt" or "Ready for college-level English courses" on the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) taken along with the English Language Arts California Standard Test in grade 11

A score of "Conditionally ready for college-level English courses" or "Conditional" on the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) taken on grade 11, provided successful completion of the Expository Ready and Writing Course (ERWC), AP English, IB English or an English course approved for extra honors weight on the University of California "a-g" Doorways course list.

A score of 500 or above on the critical reading section of the College Board SAT Reasoning Test

A score of 22 or above on the American College Testing (ACT) English Test

A score of 3 or above on either the Language and Composition or Composition and Literature examination of the College Board Scholastic Advanced Placement Program

Completion and transfer to CSU of the credits for a college course that satisfies the CSU General Education requirement in English Composition, provided such a course was completed with a grad of C or better

Entry Level Math (ELM) Exam

The Entry Level Mathematics (ELM) Examination is designed to assess and measure the level of mathematics skills acquired through three years of rigorous college preparatory mathematics coursework (Algebra I and II, and Geometry) of students entering the California State University (CSU). The CSU ELM must be completed by all non-exempt entering undergraduates prior to enrollment in any course, including remedial courses. Students who score 50 or above on the ELM will be placed in college-level mathematics classes.

Exemptions from the ELM are granted only to those who present proof of one of the following:

A score of "Exempt" or "Ready for college-level Mathematics courses" on the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP), taken in grade 11 in conjunction with the CST in Summative High School Mathematics or Algebra II.

A score of "Conditionally ready for college-level Mathematics courses" or "Conditional" on the CSU Early Assessment Program (EAP) taken in grade 11 along with the California Standards Test in Summative High School Mathematics or Algebra II, provided successful completion of a CSU-approved 12th grade math course that require Algebra II as a prerequisite.

A score of 550 or above on the mathematics section of the College Board SAT Reasoning Test

A score of 550 or above on a College Board SAT Subject Test in Mathematics (level 1 or level 2)

A score of 23 or above on the American College Testing (ACT) Mathematics Test

A score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Calculus AB or Calculus BC exam

A score of 3 or above on the College Board Advanced Placement Statistics examination

Completion and transfer to CSU of a college course that satisfies the requirement in Quantitative Reasoning, provided such a course was completed with a grade of C or better

Cost of Attendance

College costs will vary depending on where a student lives during the academic year - at home with parents or relatives, in university or campus housing (residence halls), or off campus in an apartment or other housing. For financial aid purposes, campuses must establish standard student budgets or cost of attendance allowances. Costs recognized include fees and tuition, books and supplies, meals and housing, transportation, and other miscellaneous personal expenses. Allowances for expenses, other than tuition and fees, are based largely on state-wide survey data about the average expenses of students in California and information on the local or regional costs in the area served by particular campuses.

All students enrolling at the CSU pay the systemwide Tuition Fee which is currently $5,472 per academic year for undergraduate students enrolling in more than 6 units per term and $3,174 for undergraduates enrolling in 6 or fewer units.
