School Description:

John Burroughs High School is a comprehensive high school. Originally, Burroughs High was a junior high school from 1928-1947. It became a high school in 1948. The high school has a population of approximately 2735 students in grades 9 through 12, 118 faculty members, 5 administrators, and a support staff of 68, including 4 counselors, secretaries, nurses, teaching assistants, custodians, cafeteria workers, and campus supervisors.

One of the features that is unique about John Burroughs, and which some believe a major component of its success, is the connection staff members have with our school and community. Several of the teachers and staff live in the city, and 20 graduated from John Burroughs High. Approximately 43% of the faculty have earned a master`s degree or higher, and approximately 20 members of the faculty are bilingual (English-Spanish) and 43 are certified with CLAD or SB 1969 training.

The official four-year graduation rate for Burroughs students is 98.6%. Forty-two percent of the John Burroughs senior class of 2008 completed the a-g requirements for entrance into the University of California. Our students have gained entrance into MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Occidental, University of Southern California, and most of the University of California schools and various California State Universities. About 67% of John Burroughs students continue on to a post-secondary education.

The ethnic composition of the students closely resembles the community at large: 53% Anglo, 38% Latino, 7% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 2% African-American. About 10% of the students are English Language Learners (ELL), which is much below the county average. Of 152 Limited English Proficient students, 57 were re-designated in 2007-08.

John Burroughs High School provides several unique educational programs. During the 2003-04 school year the Freshman Village was inaugurated on the second floor of the new administration building. Approximately, 22 classrooms will comprise the village where ninth graders will take 80% of their classes. The goal of the program is to provide a smooth transition for students into high school and to give them a sense of belonging. Burroughs High features a business program that provides job-shadowing, apprenticeships and project based learning. The Multi-Media Communication Arts program features broadcast journalism, video-production, photography, journalism, and digital applications. The school has a renowned performing arts program with instrumental and vocal music, dance, and drama. Many extra-curricular opportunities exist such as Mock Trial, Odyssey of the Mind, and Academic Decathlon.
