Certificated Substitute Teacher Information (see note above)
The Burbank Unified School District recruits substitute teachers from our certificated applications on file. Burbank Unified is dedicated to providing the best education possible for all students. Therefore, we take great care in the selection of our substitute teacher staff.
The minimum requirements needed for substitute teaching, which must be met prior to submitting an application in our District are the following: a Bachelors Degree in any subject and the proof of passage of the CBEST exam (California Basic Educational Skills Test). If you want more information about the CBEST exam, visit their website www.cbest.nesinc.com. Classroom absences are monitored and as the District observes a need to increase our substitute teacher staff, applications are reviewed. Once prescreened, an offer to interview is extended to top applicants.
Substitute teachers who hold an Emergency 30-day Substitute Permit are paid $118.00 per day for a regular education assignment and $123.00 per day for a special education assignment. A substitute teacher who holds a regular California teacher credential earns $118.00 per day for a regular assignment and $123.00 per day for a special education assignment. Long-term substitute teaching assignments are filled by those currently on our substitute teacher list.

Classified Substitute Information
The Burbank Unified School District employs a number of people in classified substitute positions. Working in a substitute is a good way to learn about the various classified positions available throughout the District. In addition, supervisors have an opportunity to observe a substitutes work so when an opening occurs, the substitute may be a prime candidate. Some people prefer to substitute because their availability is limited due to school schedules, or home responsibilities. The hours are flexible and many substitutes make themselves available only certain days of the week or certain hours of the day. In addition, a substitute is considered to be an employee and is eligible to apply for positions that become available to Current B.U.S.D. Employees Only.
